Non-Woven Geotextiles

Non-woven geotextiles are synthetic fabrics utilized in geotechnical applications such as civil engineering and construction projects. These materials are useful in achieving functions such as erosion control, filtration and separation, soil stabilization and drainage.

Functions

The primary function of non-woven geotextiles includes:

Filtration – By allowing water passage and preventing that of soil particles, non-woven geotextiles act as a filter. This function is commonly applied for erosion control, drainage systems and retaining walls.

Separation – Non-woven geotextiles find use separating different soil layers with different physical properties preventing mixing and maintaining individual integrity.

Reinforcement – These geotextiles can offer reinforcement and tensile strength to soils, improving overall stability and load-bearing capacity.

Drainage – Their permeable state allows non-woven geotextiles to facilitate effective drainage by allowing water passage through the fabric.

Erosion Control – Their ability to stabilize the soil through reinforcement helps reduce the erosion effect of flowing water and wind.

Advantages of Non-woven Goetextile

Some of the many advantages offered by non-woven geotextiles include:

  • Non-woven geotextiles provide excellent filtration properties preventing soil particle migration and thus maintaining desired characteristics.
  • Their permeability ensures effective drainage by reducing water buildup and maintaining soil stability.
  • These geotextiles are lightweight and thus easy to handle and install which cuts on time and labor costs.
  • They can be utilized in a wide range of applications of geotechnical nature such as civil engineering projects and landfills.
  • When used to separate different soil layers, they prevent mixing resulting in individual layers maintaining their individual stability and integrity.

Composition and Structure

Synthetic polymers such as polypropylene or polyester are used in the manufacture of non-woven geotextiles. These materials offer good strength properties, durability and resistance to biological degradation.

The fibers can be monofilament or multifilament, with varying thicknesses and lengths depending on the intended application. The non-woven geotextile is made by bonding the synthetic polymer fibers resulting in a fabric structure without weaving or knitting.

The fibers are randomly laid before using a thermal or mechanical bonding process to form a stable fabric structure. This non-woven structure is permeable only allowing passage of water but retaining soil particles.

Application Areas

Non-woven geotextiles have numerous applications some of which are summarized below:

Roadways

Roadways, landfills and athletic fields utilize non-woven geotextiles for effective drainage by controlling water buildup.

Landfills

They are implemented in landfills to separate waste from the underlying soil and also as filter for leachate drainage.

Road Construction

Road construction and railway projects utilize non-woven geotextiles to prevent mixing and maintain individual integrity.

Embankments

Embankments, slopes, retaining walls and soft ground stabilization utilize these geotextiles to improve load bearing capacity and stability.

Drainage Systems

Drainage systems, retaining walls, and landfill projects use non-woven textiles to control water buildup and maintain stability.

Slopes and River Banks

Slopes, riverbanks, embankments and coastal areas utilize non-woven geotextiles in the prevention of soil erosion and to stabilize the soil.
