Composite Geonet
A composite geonet is a type of geosynthetic material that combines geonets with other geosynthetic materials like geomembranes or geotextiles. The result is an improved material with better overall properties harnessing the individual strengths of the component materials.
Composition and Structure
The composition and structure of a composite geonet depends on the desired performance characteristics and intended application. Geomembranes or geotextiles can be combined with geonets via lamination or needle punching to make composite geonets.
Geonets are polymer derived materials with a thin, open-mesh structure capable of drainage and filtration functions. When making a composite geonet, you can attach a geotextile layer to one or either side of the geonet layer.
A geotextile layer is usually a woven or non-woven fabric derived from synthetic fibers of polyester or polypropylene. Sometimes, adding a bonding layer between the geonet and geotextile/geomembrane secures the layers from separation or delamination.

Advantages of Composite Geonet

The advantages that make composite geonets a popular material in geotechnical applications include:
Strong and Durable
Combining material layers as observed with composite geonets adds strength and stability to the overall system increasing durability and resistance to tear.
Easy to Customize
Composite geonets can be customized to meet specific project requirements considering parameters like permeability, weight and mesh size.
Exceptional Drainage Capabilities
Composite geonets offer exceptional drainage capabilities thanks to the open-mesh geonet structure allowing efficient fluid flow.
Easy to Integrate
Integrating composite geonets with existing geosynthetic materials like geotextiles or geomembranes is fairly straightforward.
Better Filtration
Since this material acts as a filtration medium, it prevents passage of soil particles while draining water reducing chances of clogging.
Better Reinforcement
The reinforcement provided by the composite layers improves the material’s load-bearing capacity which is useful where structural stability is desired.
Compatible with other Geosynthetic
This compatibility allows for the combination of different geosynthetic functions in a single product, offering enhanced performance and reducing the need for multiple individual layers.
Uses of Composite Geonet

Drainage infrastructure such as those of highways, residential landscapes and athletic fields utilize this material for effective subsurface drainage.

When installed on slopes, riverbanks, and embankments, they filter water away retaining soil particles providing stability and preventing soil erosion.

Base liners of landfills utilize composite geonets in the collection and drainage of waste water preventing contamination of surrounding soil.

Composite geonets are utilized for heap leach pads and tailings dams aiding in efficient leachate collection and drainage preventing contamination.

These materials prevent buildup of water pressure that could result in potential structural damage when used behind tunnel linings.
