What is BIAXIAL Geogrid?

Biaxial Geogrid is a reinforcement structure made of polymers such as polypropylene. They are usually designed for supporting and reinforcing soil aggregates. It is commonly referred to as a geosynthetic compound.  Usually, biaxial manufacturing process involves a series of complex processes that involves length-way stretching, extruding, cross-way stretching as well as sheet forming.

How They Work

Biaxial Geogrid brings together or compact soil aggregates thus preventing rutting whilst enhancing the soil bearing capacity. This can be attributed to their ability to evenly distribute load pressure.

As an installation requirement, you should start by preparing the base soil before installing this Geogrid. For instance, suitable leveling is required that suits the type of project in place. Likewise, safety gear such as heavy-duty clothes for protecting hands should be worn before the commencement of the work.

Biaxial Vs. Uniaxial Geogrid

As opposed to biaxial, uniaxial geogrids are designed with a single-way structure and they are commonly used in strengthening pavements as well as roads. Due to this, they are termed unidirectional structures and they are strongly interlocked thus providing high flexural strength and stiffness.

Biaxial Vs. Triaxial Geogrid

Triaxial geogrids differ from biaxial geogrids in various ways. For example, they assume a triangular shape thus making them possess a multi-directional structure. They are made up of polyethylene compounds of high density and are usually stable. Consequently, their stability provides for their high tensile strength as well as creep resistance. They are therefore used to prevent the subsiding of soil, cracking, and rutting.

Manufacturing of Biaxial Geogrid

The process of manufacturing biaxial geogrid is referred to as extrusion. This process however involves a series of complex steps and procedures as explained below;

Step 1: Preparation of Materials

This is the initial step where materials such as polymers and polyethylene are prepared to form granules.

Step 2: Extrusion Process

It is a process where the prepared materials are entered into an extruder. This chamber normally contains high temperatures that melt the materials into a homogeneous substance.

Step 3: Orientation

This process ensures the alignment of the polymer chains. After that, the next step is to cool and cut into desired shapes and lengths. Later they are packed and distributed.

Best Materials for Biaxial Geogrid

Polypropylene

They are considered the best material for biaxial geogrid since they are stiff and also have better tensile strength. Similarly, as opposed to other materials, they are relatively a cheaper option thus being advantageous for use.

High-Density Polyethylene

It is known for its ability to resist chemicals, and its good tensile strength. They are commonly used since they are easy to handle and work with and this can be attributed to their lightness in their weight.

Polyester

They are commonly used for biaxial geogrid since they are durable and thus can be used for long-term purposes and projects. They also have excellent tensile strength and are resistant to creep too.
